Multi-level marketing is a lawful marketing method built on using a network of independent distributors to market a company's products or services. The distributors not only sell, but also recruit more distributors, and are paid commissions based on their own sales, and their recruits' sales. You also want to steer clear of companies that are run by inexperienced network marketers, no matter how successful they were in other things.

Many legal multi-level marketing opportunities (and even some of the most well known ones) were founded, and are run, by inexperienced network marketers.

We've all heard the discouraging stories of people trying out various multi-level marketing opportunities...

They are given fascinating business plans of how they can achieve complete financial freedom by simply personally sponsoring 5, or 3, or maybe even just 2 distributors.

Time after time they get in all excited and within a few months or a year...give up.

It's not their fault.

It's the fault of a bad business model.

Among legal multi level marketing opportunities there are many set up with policies and procedures which kill residual income due to the leaderships' lack of experience in network marketing, or even their lack of integrity.

So it is important to become educated on what a good contract looks like and what a bad one looks like.

Many well known companies have clauses in their policies and procedures that make it possible for them to take away your down-line, on a technicality, after years of you building it.

Some reserve the right to refuse to renew your membership for any reason...and you could lose your check when you've built a solid down-line and are ready to retire.

So beware of policies and procedures that are lengthy...read them and understand what you are getting into before spending years building up to a retirement that can so easily be taken from you.

The second secret to success in multi-level marketing is timing in the company. Don't join a brand new opportunity, and don't join an old one, on the way down.

If the multi level marketing company is under two years old, it still has many quirks to work out, and will be constantly changing. A huge percentage of new MLM companies fail in the first two years...and there goes all your hard work down the drain.

The timing could also be wrong if the company has already reached it's climax and is on the way down. It's important to learn how to discern good timing for joining a company.

The third secret is to choose a remarkable product that OTHERS want to buy.

So you love those geeky gloves and want to wear them day and night for the rest of your life...fine...buy yourself some...but don't go into business selling them unless you know that the majority of people also want them. Learn to love (for business' sake) what other's love. There's more money in it!

Every multi level marketing company in the world offers a remarkable product. If it doesn't...it's probably an illegal pyramid. That is not to say that illegal pyramids don't sometimes also offer remarkable products...because they may.

That being said, since every multi-level marketing company offers a great product, there is more to look at when choosing a company you want to work with for several years, and build residual income to retire on.

If you love a product, and so does everyone else, but the company's business model stinks, buy the product, but DON'T waste your time, money, sweat and tears for years on the company.

It will more than likely fail, and it won't be your fault. It will be the fault of the foundation the company is built on.

Though it is important to believe in the product, and enjoy selling it, that is NOT a reason to choose a company to work with.

Questions to Ask about a product before becoming its distributor:

Are people excited about this product?
How many do I have to sell to make it worth my time?
Can I find it discounted on Ebay or at Walmart?
What about the competition?

The fourth secret of multi-level marketing success is a good compensation plan.

All multi-level marketing plans promise their distributors commissions - not only on their own product or service sales, but also a percentage of the sales of their recruited distributors.

When examining a multi-level marketing opportunity, find out how many people will you have to recruit to earn a monthly check of $10,000.

In some well known companies you have to have over 3000 people in your network to earn that much!! That seems like a bad deal to me.

Other companies' compensation plans cause their distributors to end up competing with their down-lines. OUCH!!
